Polk County’s cross country teams opened their 2014 season Saturday with a successful day at the Western North Carolina Cross Country Invitational.

Polk County’s girls placed sixth in the 28-team girls invitational meet while Polk County’s boys brought home a 10th-place finish in the 31-team boys invitational in the 5K event held at Jackson Park in Hendersonville. More than 1,400 runners competed in the races at the Invitational.

India Godlock posted a time of 22:07.9 to finish in the girls race, just over a minute behind winner Tabi Robinson of Greer Middle High School. Emily Kocher posted a time of 23:29.9 to place 18th, followed by Hayley Kropp (24:55.1, 46th), Allison Swope (25:39.1, 68th) and Selena Chavez (25:47.7, 73rd). Other Polk competitors included Ashton Capozzi (26.40.9), Savannah Robbins (26:43.8) and Shelby Wells (28:51.7).

The day’s schedule also included a 5,000-meter Open run. Finishing 28th in that event for Polk County was Al Russell with a time of 21:37.70. Conner Holtz posted a time of 25:15.20 and Luke Collins had a time of 29:56.90.

In the girls 5K Open, Haven Dufford took 50th with a time of 29:23.8. Sophie Young had a time of 29:59.0.
