Still the one(s): Polk boys, girls repeat as WHC cross country champs

The Western Highlands Conference boys and girls cross country championships will remain in Columbus for another year.

Polk County again swept the WHC meet, winning both the boys and girls titles on Thursday in five-kilometer races at Jackson Park in Hendersonville.

The Polk boys placed four runners in the top 10, each earning all-WHC honors, in winning the meet by 22 points over runner-up Madison. Hendersonville and Owen followed in third and fourth.

The Polk girls had three of the top 10 runners, each also named to the all-conference squad, in posting a seven-point win over Owen.

“I am exceedingly proud of all the runners,” said Polk County head coach Alan Peoples.

Mitchell’s Zach Boone, as expected, won the boys individual title with a time of 15:56.78. Polk County’s Sean Doyle placed third, Mitchell Brown took fourth, Jacob Wolfe finished sixth and Mark Federman finished 10th to propel the Wolverines to victory. Al Russell came home 18th to round out Polk’s top five runners, on which the team score is based.

In the girls meet, Avery’s Kylie Polsgrove won the individual title, but Polk County’s India Godlock and Emily Kocher placed second and third to lead the Wolverines. Hayley Kropp finished 10th, joining Godlock and Kocher on the all-conference squad, with Selena Chavez and Leah Hardin rounding out the top five for Polk.
