Saturday proved eventful for Polk County’s cross country teams as the Wolverines concluded their season at Daniel Boone’s 49th Trailblazer Invitational in Gray, Tenn.
Polk County runners left at 6:30 a.m. for the two and a half-hour trip to Gray. A day expected to be clear turned rainy, and when the Wolverines reached Daniel Boone High School, they encountered mist and drizzle.
That meant a race run with standing water on the course as well as mud, intermittent puddles and ongoing drizzle and wind. Polk runners completed the race and returned home just in time for the late-afternoon cloudburst that soaked much of Polk County.
On the course, Polk County’s Olivia Overholt posted a time of 22:27 to finish 36th overall in the girls race, won by Science Hill’s Trinny Duncan with a time of 19:16.3. More than 140 runners competed in the race.
Senior Braxton Edwards placed 67th overall to lead the Wolverine boys, who took 21st in the 26-team field. MOre than 200 boys competed in the race. Edwards posted a time of 18:59.4.
Daniel Boone’s Conner Wingfield won the race with a time of 15:55.3, finishing some 37 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Luke Thompson of Brentwood Academy.
Polk County runners will now set their sights on the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference meet, set for October 19 at 4 p.m. at Jackson Park in Hendersonville.
