Polk runners notch top-five efforts at Armentrout Invitational

Polk County turned in a strong performance at the Armentrout Invitational on Tuesday at R-S Central, placing runners near the front in both the girls and boys 5000-meter races.

Freshman Amberina Jenne led the Polk County girls with a fourth-place finish, crossing the line in 22:39.24. The Wolverines placed two runners in the top 26, with fellow freshman Sadie Schweitzer finishing 26th in 25:33.84.

Alyvia Berkowitz of Shelby won the girls race in 21:36.13, more than 38 seconds ahead of runner-up Adella Strull of Owen. Adelei Morrow of Draughn took third in 22:34.38.

On the boys side, Polk County placed 13 runners in the 63-person field. Sophomore Liam Jackson led the Wolverines with a fourth-place finish in 17:48.70, trailing only Owen’s Craig Webb, who won in 16:25.87, and the runner-up and third-place finishers from McDowell and Shelby.

Freshman Jacob Jenne added a 14th-place finish for Polk County in 19:26.54, while sophomore Dean Holland took 16th in 20:06.89. The Wolverines demonstrated their depth with freshmen William Finch and Davis Holbert finishing 19th and 21st, respectively.

Owen’s Webb dominated the boys race, winning by nearly a minute over McDowell’s Dawson Spath, who finished second in 17:21.84. Shelby’s Steven Morgan rounded out the top three in 17:24.21.
