Polk County's Davis Young

Polk County runners enjoyed a successful outing Saturday, competing in the Freedom Invitational in Morganton.

Eight of the Wolverine runners who competed delivered a personal-best time, with Davis Young pacing the Polk boys squad and Karsyn Huskey leading the Wolverine girls, both of those runners recording top-25 finishes.

“Overall we had an outstanding day,” said Polk County head coach Alan Peoples. “The team as a whole looked great.”

Young’s PR of 17:45.30 earned 23rd place in the field and helped lead Polk to a 13th-place showing in the 22-team event. West Henderson’s Hudson Rice finished in 16:03.60 to edge Tuscola’s Noah Clancy (16.06.70).

Brevard won the boys race, followed by North Lincoln and West Henderson.

Huskey’s personal best of 21:31.50 netted her a 22nd-place finish. West Henderson’s Breanna Budzinski finished in 18:24.30 to take top honors while North Lincoln, West Henderson and Tuscola took the top three spots in the girls team standings.

Polk County is set to compete next on Saturday, traveling to Greensboro to take part in the 39th Annual Greensboro XC Invitationl.
