Polk County cross country runners got their first look Friday at the course for the state championships, competing in the Friday Night Lights Festival at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville.

The Wolverine boys squad competed in the Open division, taking 21st out of 29 teams from around the state. Jayln Thomas took 23rd in the field of more than 200 runners with a time of 18:49.60, with Davis Young in 48th at 19:39.50.

Karsyn Huskey was the lone runner for the Polk girls in the Open race, placing 54th with a time of 24:43.50.

West Stokes won the Boys Open class, followed by Union Pines and South Stanly.

Polk County runners are next scheduled to be in action on Tuesday, taking part in the Mountain Foothills 7 Pre-Conference meet in Brevard. That race will begin at 4:30 p.m.
