
Battling heat and an eight-team field, Polk County’s girls cross country team placed third Tuesday in the Armentrout Invitational at R-S Central.
On a steamy afternoon, the Wolverines placed three runners in the top 11 to finish behind Shelby and R-S Central.
Olivia Overholt won the race, finishing the course in 22:14.13. Syler Purtill placed 10th in 25:39.21, with Taytem Johnson just behind in 25:58.71.
Lauren Dotson (33rd, 29:24.39) and Emma Brunell (34th, 29:46.29) rounded out the scoring for the Wolverines.
The Polk County boys placed seventh, led by Kiyon Staley’s 27th-place showing in 22:07.89.
Braxton Edwards placed 37th overall in 22:59.23, with Gus Maas in 43rd in 23:41.37. Ridge Burnett (48th, 24:14.50) and Jackson Geddings (58th, 25:17.69) completed the top five runners for the Wolverines.
Michael Simoncic (30:47.95) and Broddy Reynolds (33:33.15) also completed the race.
Polk County runners are slated to take part Saturday in the Hagen Stone Cross Country Classic in Greensboro.
