Polk County boys place seventh in state 2A cross country meet
Polk County’s boys earned seventh place in the state 2A cross country meet on Saturday, narrowly missing the top five on a wet, chilly day in Kernersville.
The Wolverines posted a team score of 188 points, just three behind Carrboro and Lake Norman Charter’s total of 185, en route to a spot in the top eight, the team’s goal entering the event.
North Carolina School of Science and Math won the 2A state title with a score of 63 points, followed by Central Academy of Technology with 79. Franklin placed fourth, with Shelby in ninth.
Individually, Sean Doyle led the Wolverines, finishing in a time of 17:21.24 to place 12th, just missing a top-10 finish and all-state honors. Jacob Wolfe ran a career-best 17:47.87 and placed 26th.
Polk County’s Mitchell Brown posted a time of 18:25.37 to finish 45th, with Mark Federman placing 55th in a time of 18:41.53. Also finishing for Polk County were Al Russell (20:01.51), Conner Holtz (21:19.44) and Luke Collins (23:57.34). Federman is the only senior who raced Saturday as fellow seniors Caleb Brown and Eli Hall were sidelined with injuries.
In the girls race, Polk County’s two qualifiers each fared well on the soggy course that slowed all runners. Sophomore India Godlock posted a time of 20:59.07 to finish 17th, with senior Emily Kocher placing 37th with a time of 21:46.38.
Carrboro’s Maysa Araba won the race with a time of 18:54.13, and Carrboro took four of the top 12 places to easily win the team title with 59 points, far ahead of the 122 of runner-up East Lincoln. Smoky Mountain placed third and Brevard placed 5th.
