Polk boys take fourth, girls fifth at Armentrout Invitational

Liam Jackson and Sophia Junge each earned top-six finishes Tuesday as Polk County turned in a pair of top-five team performances at the Armentrout Invitational at R-S Central High School in Rutherfordton.

Jackson placed fifth in the boys 5K, finishing in 17:19.88 to lead Polk County to fourth place among eight scoring teams. Junge took sixth in the girls race in 21:47.17 as the Wolverines finished fifth among 10 teams.

Brevard swept the team championships, winning the boys competition with 35 points and the girls race with 43.

Polk’s boys totaled 121 points, finishing behind Brevard, Shelby (40) and Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy (88). The Wolverines finished 10 points ahead of fifth-place Owen.

Benji Ballenger was Polk’s second finisher, placing 26th in 19:52.48. Grayson Rowe took 34th in 20:43.15, Caleb Young was 37th in 20:52.68 and Silas Amorelli finished 41st in 21:26.52 to complete Polk’s scoring five.

Logan Baird placed 45th in 21:58.46, Austin Martin was 49th in 22:22.90 and Jack Baughman finished 53rd in 22:39.95. Jayvin Clark, Talan Martin and Hunter Tadlock also competed for the Wolverines.

Keaton Campbell of Brevard won the boys race in 16:30.84.

The girls team race was tight around Polk, with Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy taking fourth with 124 points, just three ahead of the Wolverines’ 127.

Sadie Schweitzer followed Junge with a 30th-place finish in 25:04.24. Khloe Kitchen was 33rd in 25:47.56, Ethne Broyles placed 49th in 27:25.92 and LilliAnna Rhymer finished 55th in 28:21.27. Kendra Kitchen took 59th in 28:55.16.

Brevard’s Hadley Merritt won the girls race in 20:17.81.
