Edwards, Overholt lead Wolverines at Friday Night Lights

Friday Night Lights shone brightly Friday in Kernersville on a pair of Polk County runners.

Both Braxton Edwards and Olivia Overholt delivered award-worthy performances, each earning a medal with top-15 finishes in the annual cross country meet at Ivey Redmon Complex.

Competing on the same course where the 2A state championship meet will be held later this year, Overholt finished sixth in the Girls Open 5K division with a time of 21:00.00. Freedom’s Katie Dean won the race in a time of 20:09.08.

Edwards finished 14th in the Boys Open 5K, covering the course in a time of 17:43.10. Jack Anstrom of Seaforth High in Pittsboro won the race with a time of 16:38.60.

Three other Wolverine girls competed, led by Tori Thompson’s 23:11.50 that earned her 49th spot.

Polk County’s boys placed 15th in the 28-team Open field, with Mark Teague following Edwards in 38th place with a time of 18:50.30.

“It was, overall, the best race of the season,” said Polk County cross country coach Alan Peoples.

Polk County runners are slated to be back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Chase to compete in The Farm Invitational.
