Polk County's Sean Doyle, center in left group, and India Godlock, center right, both qualified for next week's state 2A cross country championships.

Polk County senior Sean Doyle and junior India Godlock each ran to top top-five finishes Saturday in the 2A West cross country regional in Morganton, earning berths in next week’s state championship meet.

Doyle completed the 5K course at Freedom High School in 16:55, finishing five seconds behind regional champion Noah Graham of Brevard. The top four teams and top seven runners not on a qualifying team advance to the state final.

Seniors Mitchell Brown and Jacob Wolfe placed 26th and 29th, respectively, as the Polk boys placed sixth in the team standings.

Godlock finished third overall with a time of 19:58. Lake Norman Charter’s Izzy Evely won the regional title with a time of 19:01.

Freshman Mariah Overholt placed 41st as the Polk girls placed ninth in the team competition.
