Wolverine Wrestling Club tackles regional competition at Firefly meet

The Wolverine Youth Wrestling Club joined more than 700 wrestlers from three states in competing in the Firefly Open on Feb. 6-7 in Columbia, S.C.

The tournament featured competitors ranging in age from four to 18.

“Typically you might have 200 wrestlers present for a local competition, but with so many states not wrestling this year due to COVID, we were able to attend a regional-sized competition less than two hours away,” said WWC’s Russell Wilson.

Wolverine wrestlers had a number of top-three showings, with Dominic Ramirez and Bo Wilson winning their classes.

“I was very happy with the way we competed,” Wilson said. “Many of our wrestlers have never competed in this caliber of a tournament and we were successful in each age division. Dominic Ramirez, the youngest wrestler on the team, won his first tournament this weekend. Dominic had so much fun and I was so happy that he finally got to wrestle kids his same size.

“Styler Blackwell and Kade Wilson also pulled off a great tournament. Each of them wrestled the eventual champion in the first round of the tournament. Losing that first match put them on the consolation side of the bracket and from there, each of them won the next three matches to challenge for second place. This is the hardest thing to do in a bracketed tournament and to have two kids do it in the same weekend was pretty awesome to watch.”
