
Roundup: PCHS graduates continue fall college athletic seasons
Mitchell Yoder gained 41 yards on seven carries Saturday to help lead Brevard to a 24-10 victory over LaGrange.
Yoder, who missed two games with an injury earlier this season, has 290 yards rushing in five games. He had a season-high 123 yards and a touchdown in the Tornados’ 22-20 win over Methodist on Oct. 8. He was named the USA South Football Offensive Player of the Week for that performance.
Women’s Soccer
MIT: Former Polk County standout Reese Alley was one of eight Engineers honored Saturday during MIT’s Senior Day, with the Engineers defeating Coast Guard 4-0.
Alley, who starts as a defender for MIT, did take her third shot of the season in the win. She scored her first college goal earlier this year in a win over Lesley.
Alley is majoring in Brain and Cognitive Science and minoring in Biomedical Engineering. She is a two-time NEWMAC Academic All-Conference selection.
SALEM: Sophomore Caelan Gaul continues to be a key part of the Salem College lineup, starting in midfield throughout the season for the Spirits.
Gaul has recorded a goal and two assists for Salem, which improved to 6-8-1 on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Pfeiffer.
Cross Country
MARS HILL: Freshman Lindsey Jenkins has become the pacesetter this season for Mars Hill’s cross country team.
Jenkins led the Lions at the recent Roanoke Invitational in Roanoke, Va., turning in a time of 26:00.2 on the 6K course to place 60th in the race.
Jenkins has led the Lions in two of their three races this season.
BELMONT ABBEY: Tori Thompson posted the fastest time of her first season at Belmont Abbey in Saturday’s Newberry Invitational cross country meet in Newberry, S.C.
Thompson ran to a time of 22:37.6, finishing 56th in the 13-team meet. Belmont Abbey won the event.
WINGATE: Mark Teague ran to a 13th-place finish in the Wingate Bulldog Stampede 8K held on Oct. 14.
Teague covered the course in 27:58.4, the second-best showing for any Wingate runner.
MONTREAT: Junior Caleb Potter took part in his second cross country meet of the season on Saturday, finishing 71st in the NAIA Appalachian Challenge in Knoxville, Tenn.
Potter covered the 8K course in a time of 27:39.3.
Montreat finished second in the 13-team competition.
Running
UNC CHARLOTTE: Recent PCHS graduate Emma Brunell is competing with the 49er Running Club, a co-ed collegiate running club at UNC Charlotte.
Brunell also took part in Saturday’s Ache Around The Lake race in Tryon, finishing third in the women’s division.
