Racing roundup: Local teens run in meet, Hoots wins at Harris

Three Polk County teens returned to the track on Sunday, competing in the Donna Davis Invitational at Mountain Island Charter School in Mount Holly.

For the group, it marked their first competition since running with Polk County High School’s track and field team in March. Each student competed on an unaffiliated basis at the meet.

Local teens competing included:

  • Emma Brunell, who placed 11th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:45.25
  • Chan Barber, who placed 11th overall and second in his heat in the 800 meters with a time of 2:08.78
  • Braxton Edwards, who took 24th in the 400 meters with a time of 54.78.

HARRIS SPEEDWAY: Josh Hoots of Columbus took top honors in the Limited Sportsman class in Saturday’s action at Harris Speedway in Rutherfordton.

Hoots finished just under a half-second ahead of Brian Carswell in the five-lap event.

CHEROKEE SPEEDWAY: Mattison Hoots of Tryon nearly scored back-to-back victories at Cherokee, placing second in the Thunder Bombers A Feature.

Hoots finished just under a second behind winner Steve Greene in the 12-lap race. Hoots narrowly defeated Greene in their previous race at Cherokee.
