Polk Central 1977 basketball teams to be honored on Friday

A reunion of two of the most successful basketball teams in Polk County history is set for Friday at Polk County High School.

In 1977, Polk Central High School had a phenomenal year with its two varsity basketball teams. The school had not one, but two teams with undefeated regular-season schedules.

It has been 43 years since this impressive accomplishment and neither team has been recognized for the feat. That will change on Friday at halftime of Polk County High’s boys game with Owen as both 1977 Polk Central teams and their head coaches will be recognized.

“When you think about it, it is impressive when one team plays well enough to go undefeated,” said Lemont Jones, Polk County head boys basketball coach “The chance of having two teams achieve undefeated regular seasons in the same year is nearly impossible.”

Both coaches and nearly all players from both 1977 teams are expected to be on hand on Friday.

All local fans are invited to attend Friday’s game at Polk County and help honor these two accomplished teams. Come be a part of a much-deserved homecoming.
