Owen once again claims Big South Freshman of the Week

After belting three home runs and a double in six games last week, Gardner-Webb’s Autumn Owen received her third Freshman of the Week award from the Big South Conference

After belting three home runs and a double in six games last week, Gardner-Webb’s Autumn Owen received her third Freshman of the Week award from the Big South Conference.

The former Polk County standout began the week with a solo home run in a loss to USC Upstate on Wednesday afternoon. The following day, she smashed her second homer and 12th of the season over the fence in left center field at USC Upstate’s Cyrill Stadium.

Over the weekend, in three Big South games against Presbyterian, Owen went 3-for-9 (.333) with a home run and double. She batted in six runs, which was second to Jenna Wacaster’s eight and scored three. The freshman catcher helped lead the Runnin’ Bulldogs improve to 26-22 overall with two wins over the Blue Hose.

In an 8-0 series opening win, Owen went 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first and an RBI single an inning later.

Both of her extra base hits in the weekend series came in an 11-10 loss in the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader.

In the bottom of the third, she hit a two-RBI double to center field that brought home Andria Booth and Weslyn Almond. Two innings later, with Almond on base, she homered to center field. The two-run shot was her third of the week and 13th of the year.

Owen ranks second among the Big South’s home run leaders and trails only Alyssa Oakes of USC Upstate who has 20. Her 13 home runs place her just outside the top 25 nationally. Additionally, she is second in the conference in runs batted in (47), total bases (99) and slugging percentage (.780). She ranks in the top-five with 21 walks and in the top-10 in both runs scored (33) and on base percentage (.435).

Owen and the ‘Dogs will return to action this weekend for a three-game series at Charleston Southern. Friday’s doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+, while Saturday’s first pitch is set for 2 p.m. with Mike Gleason calling the game on ESPN3.
