Gaul helps lead travel squad to third-place finish in S.C. State Cup

Polk County High School senior Caelan Gaul helped lead her travel soccer club team to a third-place finish in the recent Fall 2020 U.S. Youth Soccer South Carolina State Cup in Florence, S.C.

Gaul and her Carolina Football Club 02/03 Elite team entered the State Cup, held Dec. 12-13, with a 9-4-2 record, but were missing the team’s goalkeepers for a variety of reasons. That forced several players, including Gaul, to spend time in goal during the tournament.

CFC lost a tough semifinal match to SC Surf 02/03 NPL, the eventual state champions, but rallied for a 3-2 victory in the consolation final against CESA 02/03 Girls Challenge.

Gaul had the team’s first goal in that match, scoring off a cross from Anna Kate Highsmith of Travelers Rest High School. Asheville High’s Emma Smith then scored twice in the second half to secure the win for CFC.
