Foothills gymnasts open season with award-heavy showing in Hickory

Gymnasts from Foothills Gymnastics academy participated in their first competition of the season on Jan. 25 in Hickory, earning a number of podium finishes at the 2020 NC AAU 2nd Qualifier – West.

Genevieve Ard, Anna-Carlisle Keim, Hallee Mathis and Virginia Then represented FGA at the Xcel Silver level while Caity Elledge, Zina Ishwar and Sherlyn Trejo competed at the Xcel Gold level.

Keim delivered a strong performance and brought home five gold medals for her first on vault, bars, beam, floor and All Around. She had the overall highest score of 38.75 during the two-day competition for all levels and also the highest score on bars with a 9.8 for all the competing gymnasts.

Ard took home two gold medals and two silver medals for first on vault, first on beam with a high score of 9.675, second on floor, fourth on bars and second in All Around.

It was the first meet ever for Mathis and she brought home a bronze medal on floor as well as finishing fifth on bars and fifth All Around.

Then finished fourth on balance beam and fifth on vault with an eighth-place effort in All Around.

Despite only four girls on the Silver team, they finished fourth in the team competition against larger teams and all of the girls qualified for the state meet later this year.

FGA’s Xcel Gold team crushed its first competition, taking home the first place team award with a score of 111.575. Elledge, Trejo and Ishwar swept the podium in their age group, earning first, second and third place standing in All Around as well as earning the top spots on the podium for beam and floor.

Elledge brought home four gold medals for first in vault with a 9.3, beam with a 9.575, floor with a 9.45 and All Around with a 37.625. Her beam, floor and All Around scores were the highest from both Xcel Gold sessions. ️

Despite it being her first competition, Trejo brought home a gold, two silver and one bronze with first on bars with 9.425, second on floor with 9.375, third on beam with a 9.325 and second All Around with 37.125.

Ishwar earned a silver and three bronze medals with second on beam with 9.375, third on vault with 9.25, third on floor with 9.175 and third All Around with 36.825.

FGA Xcel Silver and Gold gymnasts will next compete next on Feb. 14 in Pigeon Forge at the Make it Count competition.
