Foothills gymnasts earn AAU state meet trips with qualifier showings

Gymnasts from Foothills Gymnastics Academy in Tryon participated Jan. 23-24 in the AAU 1st Qualifier Clinic – West competition in Hickory.

ScottLynn Whiteside represented FGA at the Xcel Bronze level and Genevieve Ard at the Xcel Silver level. Zina Ishwar, Anna-Carlisle Keim, Hallee Mathis, Eliza Then and Sherlyn Trejo competed at the Xcel Gold level.

Whiteside earned 36.5 all around with her second on bars with 9.55 and 9.35 on beam. Ard brought home first place in her age level with 37.1 all-around, 9.4 on bar, first on beam with 9.35, second on vault with 9.2 and tied for second on floor with 9.15.

Though a much smaller gym, FGA’s Xcel Gold team won fourth place with a score of 111.5, less than a point from 2nd & 3rd place. Ishwar earned second place all-around in her level for her age with her first place on beam with 9.55, third on vault, 9.1 on floor and 9.0 on bar. Keim also achieved second place in her age group for her 37.2 all-around with first on vault with 9.5, second on floor with 9.25, a tie for second on bar with 9.2 and 9.25 on beam.

This was Mathis’ first qualifier at the Gold level and her coach was pleased how she raised her all-around score by more than two points to 34.3. She raised her bar score by almost a point and a half to 8.9.

Then achieved second in her age group for her level with a 37.15 all-around from her 9.45 on beam, 9.35 on floor, 9.25 on bar and 9.1 on vault. Trejo scored a 9.4 for first on floor and a 9.3 for second on bars.

Despite maneuvering new procedures due to COVID, FGA’s coaches are proud as all the gymnasts scored high enough to qualify to move on to state later in the season.
