College roundup: Edwards wins one-mile race at JDL Fast Track

Former Polk County track standout Braxton Edwards showed Friday that he still has the winning touch.

Edwards won the men’s one-mile run at the JDL College Team Challenge at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem. Edwards, a freshman at UNC Charlotte, competed as an unattached runner.

Edwards finished the mile with a time of 4:28.06, holding off Concord’s Cedric Drennen, who finished in 4:29.03.

One other former Polk County Wolverine competed in Friday’s meet. Belmont-Abbey freshman Tori Thompson took 13th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:41.47.

Softball

MARSHALL: Autumn Owen has opened her 2023 season in fine style.

Through Marshall’s first four games, Owen is hitting .429 with two home runs and five RBI. She hit both homers on Saturday, one against Butler and the other against Colgate, and finished 3-for-4 in each game.

Marshall finished its opening weekend with a 3-1 record.

Indoor Track

MARS HILL: Lindsey Jenkins continued her indoor season on Feb. 4 with a 32nd-place showing in the 800-meter run at the 2023 Liberty Open.

Jenkins completed the race in a time of 2:34.16.

Earlier in the season, she helped the Lions’ 4×800-meter relay team take second at the JDL Early Bird Invitational at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.

LENOIR-RHYNE: Olivia Overholt continued a busy indoor season with a solid showing at the Division II Indoor Track & Field Pre-Nationals, held Friday and Saturday at Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Va.

Overholt took ninth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.56 and helped the Bears’ 4×400-meter relay team finish third with a time of 4:01.34.

The previous week, Overholt ran a season-best 2:22.85 in the 800 meters at the South Carolina Invitational.

MONTREAT: Junior Caleb Potter had a career-best time of 8:58.83 in the 3000-meter run at the Camel City Invititational, held Feb. 3-4 at JDL Fast Track.

Potter has run both the 3000 meters and 5000 meters this indoor season.

Wrestling

MONTREAT: Freshman Bryson McCraw finished his first regular season of collegiate wrestling with a 1-3 record.

Competing at 157 pounds, McCraw won his first college match earlier this season, defeating Lucas Saunier of Lindsey Wilson, Ky., by technical fall.

Montreat is slated to compete Feb. 18 at the Appalachian Athletic Conference Men’s Championships.

Baseball

VIRGINIA-WISE: Freshman Micah Hill has made two relief appearances in the first seven games of Virginia-Wise’s season.

Hill has pitched 1.2 innings, recording two strikeouts and allowing three hits. Hill has a 5.40 earned-run average in the two appearances.

Hill has also made one appearance at the plate, being hit by a pitch.
