There will be no youth football this fall in Polk County.

Western North Carolina Youth Football and Cheerleading, of which Polk County Youth Football is a member, has decided to cancel its 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

WNCYF includes 18 organizations throughout the area, with teams in Polk, Henderson, Buncombe, Haywood, Madison and Transylvania counties. In addition to the obvious concerns about safety, many of the organizations use public school facilities that are not currently available for use, which helped play a role in the organization’s decision.

“We will slightly be affected financially, but hopefully with the help of the community standing behind youth football and cheerleading, we will be able to make up the revenue with sponsors for the 2021 season,” said PCYF President Liz Simpson.

Simpson said that some 20 players and cheerleaders had already signed up for the upcoming year.

PCYF fields teams in three age groups as part of WNC Youth Football. The teams play their home games in G.M. Tennant Stadium.

Simpson said that PCYF has already begun thinking about next season.

“We will be back in full force next year,” she said. “Wolverine Pride starts here.”
