Polk County's Eric Avellaneda had a key win in Thursday's match

Wolverines engineer victory at Landrum

Polk County adjusted to a change in format and handed Landrum a 4-3 setback Thursday in boys tennis action in Landrum.

South Carolina schools play five singles matches, rather than six, and begin the No. 2 doubles match at the same time. That led to Gabe Alvarado and McLean Koistinen stepping in at No. 2 doubles and earning a key 6-0, 6-4 victory.

Eric Avellaneda also delivered a key singles win, topping Eli McCool 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 4 singles.

“Two fairly even teams battled each other today and fortunately we came out with the 4-3 victory,” said Polk County head coach Richard Davis.

Polk County returns to Mountain Foothills 7 Conference play on Monday, traveling to Patton.
