Polk County senior Harrison Ashworth picked up a key point in Tuesday's victory

Polk County notched its first postseason win since 2018 on Tuesday, knocking off Gray Stone Day 5-2 in the opening round of the state 1A boys tennis playoffs.

The Wolverines (5-7) earned four singles wins to take command of the match, with No. 1 doubles team Banks Barber and Riley Ballentine then clinching the team win with a triumph at No. 1 doubles.

Barber and Ballentine also earned singles wins, as did No. 3 player Charlie Jackson. Senior Harrison Ashworth delivered a key point for Polk at No. 6 singles, winning a tiebreaker with Julian Bolin Santiago to provide a vital team point.

Polk County will immediately return to the road on Wednesday, traveling to Elkin to face the defending state champion Buckin’ Elks. That match is set for 4 p.m.
