Just perfect: Wolverines complete unbeaten WHC journey

Mission accomplished for Polk County’s boys tennis team.

The Wolverines completed the first undefeated conference schedule in school history on Thursday, downing Owen 7-2 in a Western Highlands Conference match in Swannanoa.

Polk County finishes its season 8-1, with that unblemished 6-0 mark in WHC matches.

“I never thought we would go undefeated in this topsy-turby sports year,” saud Polk County head coach Richard Davis. “I’m extremely proud of the players on this team and how they have responded to the challenge.

“We talked early in the season about being conference champions, and I knew it would be a fight. However, I never thought we could pull it off without a loss.”

The Wolverines, who clinched just the second conference title in the program’s history earlier in the week, took a 4-2 lead after Thursday’s singles matches. Seniors Gaige Lewis and Luke Becker then battled to a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles to give Polk its fifth point of the day, assuring the win and the perfect WHC mark.

With no team playoffs this season, Polk County’s players will focus on individual play beginning with next week’s WHC tourney.

“I’m extremely proud and excited for the program this season,” Davis said.
