Hilltoppers net win over Wolverines, widen conference lead

R-S Central is the heavy favorite to win the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference boys tennis team title this spring.

Tuesday, the Hilltoppers showed why.

R-S Central took command of the MF7 race, handing Polk County an 8-1 setback in a conference match un Rutherfordton.

The Wolverines (8-3, 4-2) had a chance to move into a tie for first place with a win. But R-S won five of the day’s six singles matches to assure themselves of a two-game conference lead as the regular season heads into its final two weeks.

“Proud of our effort, but R-S is too good,” said Polk County head coach Richard Davis. “Their experience and talent were too much to overcome.

“They are rolling toward a much deserved conference title and we will hunker down and battle for second place.”

Riley Ballentine earned Polk’s lone point of the day, defeating Aiden Wheeler 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 at No. 6 singles.

Polk County is slated to return to action on Wednesday, hosting East Rutherford in a 4 p.m. match.
