Polk County's Gabe Alvarado returns a shot during Monday's singles play

Doubles sweep helps boost Polk past Hendersonville

Polk County’s doubles play isn’t quite yet at the level that head coach Richard Davis would prefer.

But the Wolverines are moving in that direction, as Monday showed.

Polk swept the day’s three doubles matches to secure a 7-2 victory over Hendersonville in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference match at Polk.

The Wolverines (5-1, 2-0) grabbed a 4-2 lead at the conclusion of singles competition. Banks Barber and Thaddeus Ruff followed their singles wins with a victory at No. 1 doubles, with Jack Smith and Eric Avellaneda triumphant at No. 2 doubles.

Riley Balletine and Gabe Alvarado received a forfeit at No. 3 doubles as Hendersonville competed one player short of a full lineup.

“I think Hendersonville by far is the best team we’ve faced at this point,” Davis said. “Our doubles program is definitely improving, but still evolving.”

“Banks was outstanding once again as was Thaddeus and Gabe.”

Polk County will host R-S Central on Tuesday in what promises to offer a measure of the Wolverines’ conference hopes. R-S Central is the pick of most to win the MF7 title this spring.

“We have our work cut out for us the next two days are we play them back-to- back matches,” Davis said. “No matter the outcome, I am very proud of our journey thus far considering the youth of our team.”
