Polk County Middle's Luke Garrison

Polk County Middle opened a three-goal halftime lead Monday en route to a 5-1 victory over Rugby Middle in a Blue Ridge Conference boys soccer match in Mills River.

The Wolverines (3-3-1) grabbed the lead midway through the first half as Macoda Martin took a pass from Erik Pena and struck a drive that found the top left corner of the goal for a 1-0 Polk advantage.

Pena followed with a goal off a cross from Brennan Oates, and Ross Dow added a header off a Pena corner kick shortly before the half for the 3-0 lead.

Rugby struck first in the second half, but Grayson Clancy answered with a tally off a Pena cross and Cole Huntley closed the scoring with a goal on an assist from Thomas Santibanez.

The Wolverines return to action on Wednesday, hosting Apple Valley in a 4:30 p.m. match at Utz Field.
