Wolverines outlast Warhorses to win conference opener

2 min read

Polk County’s boys soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to eight matches with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Owen Monday night in the Western Highlands Conference opener for both teams.

The Wolverines (6-0-2, 1-0) overcame an early deficit and weather delay to secure their sixth win of the season while Owen (4-3, 0-1) suffered its third loss of the campaign.

Owen controlled the early proceedings, using its speed up front to create dangerous opportunities. The strategy paid dividends midway through the first half when an Owen forward broke free and finished from a difficult angle to give the Warhorses a 1-0 lead.

A weather delay with 10 minutes remaining in the first half proved pivotal. During the break, Polk County head coach George Alley adjusted his team’s defensive approach.

“We talked all week in preparation about improving our man-to-man defense around the ball,” Alley said. “On the bus, we went over that again and decided to not chase their defenders when they played the ball around the back.”

The tactical shift paid immediate dividends after play resumed. Polk County leveled the match on what Alley described as a “real beauty” – Thomas Varnadore redirecting Tallis Metcalf’s corner kick into the far corner.

The second half saw both teams create quality chances, with Polk goalkeeper Wagoner making what Alley called “a monster save from close range” to keep the score level. The crucial moment came with approximately four minutes remaining when Cooper Meyer collected a throw-in from Metcalf and slipped the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs for the winning goal.

Metcalf finished the night with two assists.

Polk County will return to action on Monday, hosting Mountain Heritage in another WHC match.
