Wolverines erupt in second half to blast Cougars, 10-2

2 min read

A minute into the second half Monday, Mountain Heritage players raced up W.J. Miller Field, celebrating a goal and a 2-2 tie with Polk County.

Thirty minutes later, that strike and score seemed a much more distant memory than a half-hour earlier.

The Wolverines unleased a torrent of goals, scoring a remarkable eight goals in 26 minutes in sending the Cougars home with a 10-2 setback in a Western Highlands Conference match.

The nervous buzz that swept through the Polk County stands after Mountain Heritage (2-8, 1-1) scored 45 seconds into the second half quickly changed to screams of delight as the Wolverines (7-0-2, 2-0) found the net repeatedly.

Cooper Meyer started the onslaught, his header in the 45th minute kicking off the frenzy of goals. Thomas Varnadore followed with a hard drive off a Cougar defender less than a minute later, and the Wolverines were rolling.

Ross Dow, Blake Anderson, Wyatt Highsmith, Meyer, Brennan Oates and Highsmith again would each score in the run as Polk County reached double digits in goals for the first time since a January 2021 win over Pisgah in the COVID-delayed 2020 season.

Mountain Heritage also scored the first goal of the first half, taking advantage of a rebound off Polk County goalkeeper Charlie Wagoner to strike in the second minute.

Polk evened the score in the ninth minute as Varnadore scored off a nice cross from Meyer. The Wolverines then grabbed the lead in the 29th minute as Tanner Osborn collected a pass from Tallis Metcalf high above the penalty area, noticed the Cougar goalkeeper out of position and launched a drive into the left corner of the net.

The Wolverines are slated to return to action on Wednesday, hosting Madison.
