Polk County found itself chasing the game Monday at Smoky Mountain.
A much different team emerged after halftime.
The Wolverines scored twice in the second half to erase a one-goal deficit, then leaned on their defense late to earn a 2-1 victory over a Smoky Mountain squad that entered the match with a 5-0 record.
The Mustangs controlled much of the opening half in Sylva, using high-pressure defense and quick passing to keep Polk from settling into possession. Smoky Mountain eventually drew a penalty kick and converted it for a 1-0 halftime lead.
Polk County coach George Alley made a midfield change after the break, bringing on Juan Vazquez, whose presence helped the Wolverines (5-0) begin moving the ball more effectively.
That patience eventually paid off.
Erik Ramirez drew a foul deep in the attacking third, setting up a Polk free kick. Ross Dow served the ball into the box, where Brady Carroll headed it into the net to pull the Wolverines even.
About 10 minutes later, Jackson Blotner put Polk in front, driving a side volley into the net for a 2-1 advantage.
Smoky Mountain pushed for an equalizer in the final 10 minutes, but the Polk defense again protected a narrow lead. Matt Jarrett and Grayson Meyer turned away repeated Mustang attacks as the Wolverines held on for the victory.
Polk returns to action Wednesday with a road match at Asheville.
