Polk County Middle's Cade Bright reaches for a Flat Rock shot during the first half of Monday's match

Polk County Middle didn’t hand Flat Rock its first loss of the season on Monday.

But the Wolverines came close enough to make the day more than just a moral victory.

Flat Rock made an early goal stand, holding on to defeat Polk Middle 1-0 in a Blue Ridge Conference battle at Utz Field.

The Wolverines (7-3) held the Eagles (10-0) to their lowest offensive total of the season. But Polk Middle could never find the equalizing goal despite some chances, especially in the second half.

“The only disappointing thing about the whole day is the first half, when we did not execute, except in bits and pieces, what we talked about doing,” said Polk Middle head coach Lennox Charles.

“The effort was really good. We worked hard. We created a lot more chances in the second half and kept the ball a lot better in the second half. We did what we wanted to do after we worked hard to win the ball on defense.”

Cade Bright had a handful of saves in the loss.

Polk Middle has a key match Wednesday at Brevard Middle before closing out the regular season at home next Monday against Rugby Middle.

“The challenge now is to reproduce how we played today the rest of the way,” Charles said.
