Polk secures state playoff berth with win at Avery

Polk County is returning to the boys 1A state soccer playoffs.

The Wolverines secured a postseason berth with Monday’s 3-1 win over Avery in a Western Highlands Conference match in Newland.

Polk County improved to 7-2-1 overall, 6-2 in WHC play. The Wolverines are assured of finishing as the top 1A team in the conference, which means an automatic berth to the state playoffs that begin March 16.

Matias Akers had two goals Monday, both on passes from Cameron Greve, with Wylie Rauschenbach scoring the other on a cross from Jack Smith.

Avery (2-6, 2-5) added its goal late in the match.

“We kept possession of the ball mostly, we played very aggressively and challenged every ball,” said Polk County head coach Josh Trejo. “Overall, a very good game from the boys.”

The two teams meet again Wednesday at Avery in what will be the final match of the regular season for Polk County.
