Polk County Middle secured second place in the Blue Ridge Conference’s East Division on Monday with a 2-1 victory at Rugby Middle in boys soccer action.
The Wolverines wrapped up a 10-2 regular season with the victory. Polk Middle is seeded fourth in the six-team postseason tournament and will host fifth-seeded Flat Rock on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
The winner of that match will face top-seeded Waynesville Middle in the semifinals.
Cole Pereira scored both goals for Polk Middle. The first came in the third minute and gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead, with the second coming in the 46th minute as Pereira dribbled from deep in Polk’s end of the field, weaving through several Rugby defenders, before beating the goalkeeper into the left corner of the net.
“It was a very tough match, they played well and worked very hard,” said Polk Middle head coach Lennox Charles. “We responded and did a lot better job in the second half.”
