Polk County Middle boys soccer – Blue Ridge Conference East Division champions.
The Wolverines clinched that label on Wednesday, downing Flat Rock Middle 2-1 on an afternoon that felt very much like autumn at Utz Field.
Polk Middle (10-1-1, 8-0) completed a sweep of Flat Rock and secured the first BRC title of any kind for the program since 2006. The Wolverines will be the top seed from the East for the upcoming conference playoffs.
Yet head coach Lennox Charles isn’t ready to celebrate just yet.
“They have a chance to do something that is very hard to do and not many have done,” Charles said of Polk’s shot at finishing undefeated in East Division play.
The Wolverines took an early lead as Cole Huntley redirected a Ross Dow corner kick into the net. Flat Rock answered moments later, but the Wolverines came back and scored on a Dow goal from some 15 yards out.
Polk saw a shot at extending the lead go awry with a missed penalty kick, but the Wolverine defense held firm.
Polk finished with a 12-6 edge in shots.
“We got off to a good start, and created chances in the first half,” Charles said. “However we did not take advantage of them.
“Flat Rock had a lot more of the second half, and from the first minute we lacked the same energy we had in the first half. We kept working hard even though we did not have nearly as much of the ball as in the first half.”
Polk Middle will host Brevard Middle on Monday at 4:30 p.m. before closing its regular season with a trip to Rugby Middle.
