Polk Middle pulls away in final minutes to down Brevard Middle

Polk County Middle pulled away in the second half Monday to hand Brevard Middle a 4-2 defeat in a Blue Ridge Conference boys soccer match in Brevard.

The Wolverines (10-2) trailed 1-0 at halftime, but evened the score early in the second half as Brennan Oates swiped a ball from a defender and found the net from some 12 yards out.

Liking that approach, Callaway Cameron repeated it moments later, stealing the ball and feeding it to Oates, who slipped past a defender and scored again to give Polk a 2-1 lead.

Brevard Middle (3-7) responded by taking command of the match for much of the second half and netted the equalizer with six minutes remaining in regulation.

But two minutes later, an Oates shot was stopped, but the rebound found its way to Asher Brooks, who shot once, corralled another deflection and slotted that one into the goal to give the Wolverines a 3-2 lead.

Polk added an insurance goal in the waning minutes as Alec Fine snared the rebound off another stopped shot, dribbled past the goalkeeper and calmly tapped the ball into the net.

“I was very pleased with the response to their second goal,” said Polk Middle head coach Lennox Charles.

Polk Middle closes its regular season on Wednesday, hosting Rugby Middle for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff at Utz Field.
