Polk County Middle celebrated its eighth graders in style Wednesday, shutting out Brevard Middle 4-0 in a Blue Ridge Conference boys soccer match at Utz Field.

It was the final regular-season home game for the team’s eighth graders, and the Wolverines made sure it would be a memorable one, dominating play most of the steamy afternoon.

Polk Middle won its sixth straight match to improve to 9-2 overall, 7-2 in East Division matches. The Wolverines travel Monday to Rugby for their regular-season finale, and a win there means Polk Middle can finish no worse than second in the East and could perhaps end in a tie for first.

Jack Smith scored a pair of first-half goals for Polk Middle to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead at the break, those tallies coming in a span of four minutes. Topher Pearson assisted the first while Ethan Wilson aided the second.

The Wolverines continued to build the lead in the second half, with a Smith corner kick leading to a Pearson header to make it 3-0 in the 41st minute.

Polk Middle closed the scoring three minutes later as Evan Jones took an Elliot Whiteside pass and broke free of the Brevard defense, dribbling in and beating the goalkeeper for his seventh goal of the season.
