Polk County continues unbeaten run with dominant win at Mountain Heritage

2 min read

Polk County extended its unbeaten streak to 14 games with a clinical 9-1 dismantling of Mountain Heritage in Western Highlands Conference action Wednesday.

The Wolverines (11-0-3, 6-0-1 WHC) controlled possession from the opening whistle and relentlessly attacked Mountain Heritage’s bunkered defense, methodically breaking down the Cougars (3-11-1, 2-4-1 WHC) with precise passing and well-timed runs.

Thomas Varnadore opened the scoring early, tucking a left-footed shot just inside the far post to set the tone for the afternoon. The Wolverines took a 3-0 lead into halftime after Sebastian Azar struck twice in the final minutes of the first half.

Blake Anderson initiated the second goal, getting in around the side before slotting a pass to a cutting Azar, who drilled home from close range. Less than two minutes later, Cooper Meyer juked a Mountain Heritage midfielder and delivered a through ball to Azar, who beat a defender and slotted the ball past the keeper.

Polk County’s dominance intensified after the break. Varnadore created a turnover deep in Mountain Heritage territory, drove down the endline and found Brinson Ashworth cutting to goal for a finish that made it 4-0.

With 15 minutes remaining, the Wolverines unleashed a five-goal barrage. Varnadore added his second goal on a near-post finish off a Ross Dow corner kick. Erik Pena then converted a pass from Luke Garrison, calmly sliding the ball just inside the post.

Meyer capped the scoring spree with a hat trick in a four-minute span. He first capitalized on a deflection from a Mason Hudson direct kick, then finished a breakaway after collecting an Azar through ball from midfield, and completed his treble by drilling home a slanted pass from Anderson from the edge of the box.

Polk County travels to Madison on Monday for its next Western Highlands Conference test.
