Polk County needed patience and persistence, but the Wolverines’ quality eventually overwhelmed a determined Avery squad in a 4-0 Western Highlands Conference victory Wednesday in Newland.
Mason Hudson led the way with two goals as Polk County improved to 9-0-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play while extending its unbeaten streak to 11 matches. The Wolverines remained perfect in league play with the road victory over Avery (1-13, 0-6 WHC).
The Vikings made life difficult for the Wolverines by deploying a compact 4-4-2 formation with midfield and defensive lines bunkered near the penalty area. The tactical approach proved effective through much of the first half as Polk County struggled to find the breakthrough despite dominating possession.

The deadlock finally broke around the 35-minute mark through quick thinking and precise execution. After drawing a foul just inside midfield, Tallis Metcalf caught the defense off guard with a quick restart to Cooper Meyer, who lofted a perfectly weighted ball to the far post where Hudson rose to head home for a 1-0 halftime advantage.
The second half saw Polk County settle into a rhythm and pull away. Thomas Varnadore doubled the lead with a flick finish inside the near post from Ross Dow’s low-driven corner kick. Hudson added his second goal with an unassisted strike from an angle that skidded into the lower right corner.
Meyer, who assisted on the opening goal, got on the scoresheet himself late in the match. After Erik Pena rolled a free kick restart into a gap just left of the defensive wall from outside the box, Meyer drove the ball home into the bottom right corner to cap the 4-0 victory.
Head coach George Alley made a halftime adjustment to move Tallis Metcalf into a more defensive position in midfield. Alley noted that Metcalf “did a great job bringing down Avery’s defensive clearances and distributing the ball.”
Polk County will look to maintain its perfect conference record when it travels to face Hendersonville on Monday.
