Oates tallies thrice to help Polk Middle silence Lions

Polk Middle scored early – and often – in its season debut Wednesday.

Brennan Oates found the net in the first three minutes of the Wolverines’ season opener and then did so twice more in the opening half, his hat trick helping spark Polk Middle to a 4-1 win over Asheville Christian Academy at Utz Field.

Oates’ scoring heroics helped drive Polk Middle to a 3-0 halftime lead. The eighth grader scored on an early breakaway, then added his second goal on a perfectly struck long free kick before adding his third goal late in the first half.

Oates had a handful of additional chances in the opening 30 minutes, with ACA’s goalkeeper making several stops to keep the margin from growing.

Asher Brooks struck early in the second half to up the Polk lead to 4-0, with Wolverine goalkeeper Jackson Blotner and the Polk defense keeping the Lions in check.

ACA finally got on the board in the final 10 minutes as Polk substituted liberally.

The Wolverines hit the road on Monday, traveling to Smoky Mountain Middle for a 4:30 p.m. match.
