Brevard answers Polk threat, pulls away in second half

2 min read

Polk County Middle found a spark early in the second half Monday at Brevard, but the Blue Devils quickly snuffed it out.

After Polk cut a two-goal halftime deficit in half, Brevard answered with two goals in a three-minute span and went on to a 5-1 Blue Ridge Conference victory.

Brevard (9-1) took the lead in the seventh minute, scoring off a corner kick. The Blue Devils added another first-half goal on a shot from the left side of the penalty area that struck the right post and went into the net, sending Polk into halftime trailing 2-0.

The Wolverines pulled within a goal in the 34th minute with a nicely constructed attack.

Abbott Shukha won the ball near the top of Polk’s defensive third and played it to Julian Albarran. Albarran turned, carried the ball forward and slipped a through ball to Colton Stahr, who ran onto the pass and finished past the goalkeeper into the left side netting.

Any momentum from the goal disappeared quickly, though. Brevard scored at the back post in the 37th minute and struck again in similar fashion in the 39th, this time finishing a ball in the air, to stretch the lead to 4-1.

The Blue Devils added their final goal in the 59th minute on a shot from the top of the penalty area.

The loss dropped Polk County Middle to 5-4-1. The Wolverines return home Wednesday to face Flat Rock Middle.
