Wolverines pound Madison to take WHC opener

Polk County built a 41-17 halftime lead and cruised to a 75-55 win Friday at Madison in the Western Highlands Conference opener for both teams.

Jamal Wheeler scored 33 points and added eight steals, four rebounds and four assists to lead the Wolverines (3-3, 1-0). Wes Mullis had 11 points.

Polk County took a 22-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, then held the Patriots (0-7, 0-1) to just six points in the second period while building the lead.

Daniel Painter added nine points, Jaymes Wingo and Jaylon Bontrager each had six, Dillion Overholt had four and Davis Derkach, Holden Owens and Seth Hardin each finished with two for Polk, which next travels to Mitchell on Tuesday.
