Wolverines fall in defensive battle at Mitchell

A defensive battle tipped Mitchell’s way Friday, the Mountaineers taking a 49-31 victory over Polk County in boys baskeball action in Bakersville.

Mitchell (4-8, 1-3) held Polk County (6-10, 2-2) to just nine points in the first half in building a 21-9 lead at intermission. The Mountaineers made that lead stick in the second half.

Polk County shot 24.5 percent from the field in the game, including a 4-for-22 effort from the 3-point line.

Dominique Carson had seven points to lead Polk, with Keyandre Thomas scoring six points and grabbing nine rebounds. Brett Bagwell had four points and five rebounds.

Shaq Wingo, Wesley Royster, Brandon West and Tyler Staley each had three points, with Staley adding five rebounds. Bryson Edwards had two points for Polk.

The Wolverines continue their Western Highlands Conference schedule on Tuesday, hosting Mountain Heritage.
