Wheeler carries Polk County to first win of season at Mountain Heritage

Jamal Wheeler scored a season-high 30 points Friday and hit two key free throws in the final seconds to lift Polk County to its first win of the season, a 59-54 victory at Mountain Heritage.

Wheeler hit a pair of free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining to help the Wolverines snap an eight-game losing streak. Polk County (1-8, 1-1) also knocked off a Mountain Heritage squad some expect to contend for the Western Highlands Conference title. The Cougars fell to 3-5, 1-1 with the loss.

Arnie Twitty added 10 points as Polk overcame a 31-point effort from Mountain Heritage’s Avery Austin.

Wheeler also had nine rebounds, six assists and six steals for Polk, which now enters a two-week break before hosting Mitchell on Jan. 2.
