Winter weather, as seemingly happens every year, has played havoc with local high school and middle school sports schedules, keeping officials constantly monitoring conditions while trying to get the remainder of the current regular season completed.
With road conditions starting to improve in the wake of Friday’s snowstorm, Polk County’s home games on Tuesday with Mitchell are currently slated to be played as scheduled. Officials from both schools plan to talk Tuesday morning to confirm, but the games are slated to be played as of Monday evening.
Polk County hopes the games for its trip to Mountain Heritage, postponed Thursday, will now be played on Feb. 1. Last week’s non-conference games at West Henderson probably won’t be rescheduled, school officials said, due to the tight timeframe to get conference games scheduled before season’s end, although those games haven’t yet been officially cancelled.

Polk County’s wrestling squad has cancelled its planned match Thursday with East Henderson, so the Wolverines are finished with their regular season. Polk County wrestlers will compete Friday in the Western Highlands Conference tournament at Mountain Heritage.
Polk County Middle School had already rescheduled last week’s basketball games and wrestling match with Apple Valley, those now to be played Wednesday at Apple Valley (basketball) and PCMS (wrestling).
What will happen to Monday’s postponed dates with Flat Rock is less certain. With the Blue Ridge Middle School Conference tournament slated to begin next week, it’s possible the games might be played Feb. 1 or might not be played at all if there is no impact upon tournament seedings. Officials at both schools will make that determination later this week.
