Third-quarter surge carries Mitchell boys past Polk

Mitchell exploded for 31 third-quarter points Friday en route to a 75-50 win over Polk County in the opening round of the Western Highlands Conference boys basketball tournament in Ledger.

The Mountaineers (10-13) held a 23-17 halftime lead before racing away in the third period to drop Polk County to 2-21 overall.

Dominique Carson had 12 points to lead Polk County, with Tyler Staley adding nine. Amir Gary had eight, with leading scorer Clark Phipps held to six points.

Nate Henderson and Wesley Royster each had five points, with Shaq Wingo adding four and Zeke Herrmann scoring one.
