Polk Middle's David Duffy battles to grab a rebound during the second half of Monday's game

Canton Middle spoiled the season opener Monday for Polk County Middle, handing the Wolverines a 37-14 setback in Blue Ridge Conference boys basketball action at Polk.

Key action: Polk’s Ross Dow opened the game with a 3-pointer, but the Wolverines wouldn’t score again until 32 seconds remained in the second period. Canton built a 17-3 lead by that point and led 18-7 at half.

The Wolversines fought back within 10, 21-11, on a David Duffy basket with 4:19 left in the third period. That would be as close as Polk would get.

Scoring: Dow had six points, with Duffy adding four. Luke Garrison and Sam Rhein each added two points for Polk.

Records: Canton is now 1-0, with Polk Middle 0-1.

Next up: Polk Middle is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 29, traveling to Asheville Christian Academy.
