Second-quarter Madison run ruins Polk upset hopes

Madison seized control of Tuesday’s battle with Polk County in the second period and held on for a 64-52 win in Western Highlands Conference action in Marshall.

The Patriots (15-8, 8-2) outscored Polk County (0-19, 0-8) 21-5 in the second quarter, building a 33-16 halftime lead. Madison held enough of that lead in the second half to preserve the win.

Clark Phipps had 24 points and five rebounds to lead Polk County, with Dominique Carson scoring 12 points. Zeke Hermann added five points and nine rebounds, with Amir Gary also scoring five points.

Tyler Staley and Nate Henderson each added three points for Polk County, which wraps up its regular-season home schedule on Wednesday against Robbinsville.
