Polk County raced to a huge first-quarter lead Tuesday and made it stand, topping Mitchell 35-25 in a Western Highlands Conference junior varsity matchup at Polk.

The Wolverines (4-1, 3-1) wasted no time in rebounding from last week’s loss at Avery, opening a 12-2 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Mackus Simpson played a key role in that start, drilling a pair of 3-pointers in the period. Simpson finished with four threes as part of his 18-point effort.
