Polk County’s Mackus Simpson drives to the basket following an East Rutherford turnover during Wednesday’s game

Polk JVs check East Rutherford outside threat, pull away for victory

Polk County’s junior varsity withstood an early barrage of East Rutherford 3-pointers en route to a 40-27 victory Wednesday in the Wolverines’ home and season opener.

East Rutherford scored all of its points in the first half from the 3-point stripe, hitting seven triples to trail just 24-21 at the half.

But Polk County’s defense stopped that outside threat in the final two quarters, holding East Rutherford to just six points in the second half and no threes.

The Wolverines began to inch away late in the third period, with Wayne Carson’s basket just before the buzzer giving Polk a 30-23 lead. Mackus Simpson opened the fourth with a steal and layup, and Antonio Simpson’s rebound basket gave Polk a 34-23 advantage and a lead that would stay in double digits the rest of the game.

Antonio Simposn scored seven of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter for Polk, with Mackus Simpson hitting three 3-pointers in the game and finishing with 11 points.

Vincent Twitty had four points, with Lawson Carter adding three and Carson and Landen Bradley each scoring two.

Polk County is next scheduled to be in action on Jan. 15, traveling to Madison for its Western Highlands Conference opener.
