Polk County dropped a heartbreaking 62-57 decision Friday to Owen in the opening round of the Western Highlands Conference boys basketball tournament in Swannanoa.
The Wolverines (6-18) trailed by just two points entering the final period, but Owen (8-16) hung on to secure a semifinal matchup Tuesday with top-seeded Mountain Heritage.
Dominique Carson led Polk County with 16 points, with Tyler Staley adding 11. Bryson Edwards joined the group in double figures with 10 points.
Keyandre Thomas had eight points and four rebounds, with Wesley Royster scoring five points. Kanye Staley, Shaq Wingo and Brett Bagwell each had two points and Grant Waddell had one.
The Wolverines will now wait for the Feb. 22 announcement of the state 1A boys basketball playoff bracket. Early projections have Polk County missing an at-large berth, though that is based on the Feb. 3 Max Preps Adjusted Ratings.
